Firefighters battling blazes across New South Wales, Australia, have stumbled across a hidden field which contained a cannabis crop.

The NSW Rural Fire Service made the discovery on Friday when they were working near the town of Tahmoor, west of Woollongong.

The firefighters took the opportunity to take selfies with the marijuana plants and posted them online, according to the MailOnline.

The surprising find took place in an area close to where two firefighters lost their lives when the fire truck they were in rolled over earlier this week.

The RFS tweeted photos of the men, who have been named as Deputy Captain Geoffrey Keaton, 32, and Firefighter Andrew O'Dwyer, 36, they were both from Horsley Park Brigade.

The service wrote: "Our thoughts are with their family, friends & fellow brigade members."

The two men, who were both fathers, were remembered by Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison. He wrote: "They were bravely defending their communities with an unmatched spirit and a dedication that will forever set them apart amongst our most courageous Australians.

"Their sacrifice and service saving lives and saving properties will be forever remembered. I wish those injured all the best in their recovery."

The RFS added: "Another three firefighters have received injuries as a result of the accident. The Service's thoughts are with all the firefighter's family, friends and fellow brigade members. This is an absolutely devastating event in what has already been an incredibly difficult day and fire season."

Following the tragic news, many people have kindly asked how they can help these firefighters' families so NSW RFS has created a dedicated bank account to collect donations. All funds received will be equally distributed between the spouses of Geoffrey and Andrew, and tax receipts will be issued to donors.

Donations can be made into the following account and they have also asked that you include your name when making a deposit:
